In 1902, the British Admiralty assigned HMS Calypso, built 1881-1884, as training vessel for Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve. During World War I, HMS Calypso was used to protect Newfoundland shipping routes and coast. Calypso was renamed HMS Briton in 1916.
